Fix for using standard account?

Post by eightnoneone » Thu 3. May 2012, 18:17

I've seen then mentioned many many times.

Dirk, Can you list the issues involved? Why can't MAMP be configured to run with a standard account?

You've mentioned:
/etc/hosts. Could this be solved with a file ACL?
privileged ports. Can MAMP be configured to run on 8080 or similar to avoid this?

What are the other blockers?

Thanks,
Matt

I did some more experiments and got further on this.

I created a group and set the MAMP dir and all subs for group ownership and rwx privs.
Then set the httpd.conf to use this group and the standard user (by commenting out the user directive).

Starting and stopping services works, though it asks for admin auth twice. If you just cancel both, services still start.

So again it comes to, What are the Auth's for? Can we resolve the need or is the app just making the assumption and asking for root? If the later, might there be a preference added to run as standard user and skip this assumption?

Yep, I agree, that's quite obnoxious... It would be great if the standard account could work for it.
