MYsql will not start

Post by theimage1 » Wed 16. May 2012, 01:35

I am running on an Intel MacPro on OSX 10.6.8 12 gig RAM (Freshly installed system from disk)

I have system File Sharing, Screen Sharing, Print Sharing ON and WEB Sharing OFF (all others off)

I installed MAMP and ran it ... Apache Green mysql red

I ran Disk Utility - ran REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS
Apache Green mysql red

I ran Activity Monitor there are NO mysql processes running for any user including root
I went to terminal and ran killall -9 mysqld
then ran in sudo mode with root password
same result - no files detected
ran MAMP Apache Green mysql red

I reset my own personal password for login to password
I edited the files
/Applications/MAMP/bin/phpMyAdmin-X.X.X/config.inc.php
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'root'; ---> changed to $cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'password';

$link = @mysql_connect(':/Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock', 'root', 'root'); changed to
$link = @mysql_connect(':/Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock', 'root', 'password');

ran MAMP ... Apache Green mysql red

Reinstalled MAMP 2.0.5 from scratch .... SAME RESULT

Installed MAMP 1.9.6 from scratch .... same result

edited same files as above in 1.9.6 - ran MAMP - same result

Reinstalled 2.0.5 - edited same files - same result

I tried resetting the ports to BOTH the suggested ones and the initial ones
SAME RESULT

Here is the last log file
120515 21:06:44 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.pid ended

I don't know UNIX but I use BBEdit to edit the file above and same them back to same location.

I can use the Terminal program but don't know what else to look for. I have tried all the things I can find on the forum which may have helped, but nothing seems to work.

Help!!!

I finally found the problem ...

this code was also recommended on an earlier post ...

run the following commands on terminal:
mv /etc/my.cnf /etc/my.cnf.bak
(This failed with a permission problem.)

but

I had to change the command to
sudo mv /etc/my.cnf /etc/my.cnf.bak

and then give it my root password

now both apache and mysql show green

People who don't understand the finer points of UNIX (like myself) will spend hours trying to figure this out. I don't even know what I did or what I actually corrected, but it finally works, at least to the start level. Is there a reason why the install scripts are using root to install the mysql stuff, couldn't it be done at the user level instead?

I tried this command but the file doesn't exist.

I reinstalled and the file still doesn't exist. Where else could it be?

Thanks so much for posting this. It solved 4 hours of fruitless fix attempts. This information should be in big red letters at the top of every MAMP README file.

That file doesn't exist on my Mountain Lion installation in /etc. Anyone have any success on an ML install?

Yesterday I installed 2.1.2 and it did work so I was able to test my project, thanks for getting 2.1.4 out so soon. Here's hoping it fixes my issues.

I'm having similar issues. Neither my Apache server nor MySQL server start up. I've yet to see a red light turn green! :(
For several days now I've tried the various suggestions using Terminal command lines, and I've tried reinstalling MAMP, but so far have had no success. It appears that I too am missing the my.cnf file. I tried the command line:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/my.cnf /etc/my.cnf.bak
, but no luck. Also, it appears there is supposed to be an /etc/ folder in the root of the MAMP app, but there is no such folder in my installation. People have suggested to check the error logs. I wish I could, but the log folder is completely empty.
Any ideas what might be happening?

I'm on OSX 10.6.8

I have installed Mamp on my new PC and everything works fine, there is no errors. When I installed Mamp as per my technician's suggestion I had disabled the antivirus and installed Mamp. I guess that might have blocked your installation in the PC. Remove everything, disable antivirus and try installing Mamp.
