MySQL Server will not start

Postby wsday » Wed Apr 16, 2008 10:24 am

- Installed MAMP on my 10.5.2 system, in Applications folder
- Put the widget in ~/Library/Widgets
- Put my html and php content into htdocs
- Clicked Start Servers on the widget, after 12 hours, the cursor is still spinning
- Opened MAMP, clicked Start Servers. Apache Server is green, MySQL red
- Opened Preferences, changed Ports using Set to default. Apache still green, MySQL still red
- Opened Preferences, changed Ports using Reset MAMP ports. Apache still green, MySQL still red
- tried the fix noted on other posts, to Open Preferences and just hit OK, with both port settings. No change. Apache green, MySQL red
- Quit and restart MAMP. No change.
- Delete widget. Reinstall. No change.
How do I get MySQL Server to start?

Hi wsday,

do you see any errors in mysql_error_log or in the general Console log?

Thanks,

Hi severin,
Do you need something additional to figure out what is wrong? If so, please ask and I will be happy to provide it. I would greatly appreciate some guidance on how to fix this problem, so I can move forward.
Thx,

Hi wsday,

I guess that you have another installation of mysql and MAMP's mysql is getting confused by the other my.cnf file. Do you still need it? Can you find it and try to rename it to see if the problem persists?

Thanks,

I have seen the EXACT same issues with my installation too. Running Mac OS X 10.5.6 (not the server version). Intel Mac mini 1 GB RAM. Apache starts, but MySQL won't start. This system doesnt have any other conflicting installations of MySQL. No port conflicts. Tried various ports. No PID file is ever created. Cant change MySQL root password. I will post MySQL and Mac OS X logs here.

Its March 26th 2009. Nobody has a solution yet?

Discovered this possible solution this morning,

For Mac OS X 10.5.8:
1. Launch the Activity Monitor and select "My Processes".
2. Look for the process, "mysqld" and quit each instance. Might see more than one instance.

Possible conflicting and multiple "mysqld" processes causing the sql server instance not to launch.

Not sure if this is the safe way, but it appeared to solve the issue.

Let me know if this works or not for you.

Well, I've got a similar problem.
Mysql will not start.
The mysql log shows: msqld_safe A mysqld process already exists

When running the activity monitor, there is no mysqld process running...

This may help if there is a System Pref conflict under Sharing:

1. Locate "Sharing" under the "System Prefs"
2. Goto "Web Sharing" and turn off and turn on (Low-tech suggestion, I know)

Let me know if this works-- something wonky happens sometimes when MAMP meets OS X web server functionality. The two just don't always dance well together at times.

No such service is active...
Only remote management and screen sharing are on.

I'm interested in your issue. My hunch is that multiple Mysql server instances are running. If not, let us know.

Beyond these 3:

1. Looking in "System Prefs" and restarting "Sharing > Web Server" or,
2. Checking "System Prefs > Other: MySQL Pref" and and stop a running instance or,
3. Scroll thru all the process dropdowns under the Activity Monitor,

I'd guess a re-install of MAMP and a system reboot is less hassle.

This fixed my problem! Thanks!

Process:
quit MAMP

run the following commands on terminal:
mv /etc/my.cnf /etc/my.cnf.bak

Start MAMP

Thanks, though I only had one instance running. I quit that, tried again and it worked!

There seems to be a million ways of solving this supposedly, but mine was to simply move my.cnf out of the etc to the desktop. Started MAMP, it works!
As someone else said earlier in this thread, there must have been just too many my.cnf files to allow it to start.

Good luck.
