For Mac OS X 10.5.8:
1. Launch the Activity Monitor and select "My Processes".
2. Look for the process, "mysqld" and quit each instance. Might see more than one instance.

Possible conflicting and multiple "mysqld" processes causing the sql server instance not to launch.

Not sure if this is the safe way, but it appeared to solve the issue.

Let me know if this works or not for you.
This worked for me!! As a total newbie (I have to learn how to use Drupal for a job so I installed MAMP), I didn't even understand most of the other answers I found online. I am slowing figuring all this out, problem by problem. THANKS SO MUCH!!

I had the same experience (MySQL Server not starting) after I had tried something (lost the context and sequence of events, but I somehow screwed something up!)

So I tired the resetting of the Web Sharing (didn't solve problem) and using the Activity Monitor to STOP the mysql-based process (didn't solve the problem) and finally ...

SEDMONDS' SUGGESTION DID IT FOR ME!
I'm interested in your issue. My hunch is that multiple Mysql server instances are running. If not, let us know.

Beyond these 3:

1. Looking in "System Prefs" and restarting "Sharing > Web Server" or,
2. Checking "System Prefs > Other: MySQL Pref" and and stop a running instance or,
3. Scroll thru all the process dropdowns under the Activity Monitor,
Thank you ALL for posting your suggestions and to those who tried them and responded with their results.

I'm getting this error when trying to start mysql:

I've checked the activity monitor and there are no instances of mysqld running and tried everything else on this forum so I don't know what else I can check. Can somebody help?

I have a similar problem, and it seems that even following the previous advice can't make it work.

Hi i found my solution in the 'mysql_error_log.err' file.

InnoDB: Check that you do not already have another mysqld process

I opend activity monitor and quitted the mysqld process.

Restart Mamp and the problem was fixed!:)
