Apache won't work on Port 80 or 8888

Post by sail2bob » Fri 21. Jun 2013, 00:26

Version 2.1.3 of MAMP running on snow leaopard OSX 10.6.8 - MySQL starts up fine but Apache- nothing so far. I've tried editing the httpd.conf file in various ways as recommended on various pages of this forum and others but I think it's to do with my user name or group: When I type into Terminal:

cd /Applications/MAMP/bin/
./startApache.sh

I get back: Syntax error on line 146 of /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache/httpd.conf:
User takes one argument, Effective user id for this server

I followed some more advice to determine whether Group #-1 was the correct entity for my user name and entered into Terminal

ls -lha

This told me that my group might be called staff

Nothing seems to be having any effect

Result! I logged in to my computer as Admin, (my own userID is also set to Admin - but clearly not all Admin are equal), downloaded MAMP and the two servers came online straight away Port 80 as desired. Logged in to my own ID and it's all working perfectly. A bit of a bore to have to do two logins but better than nothing.
